Lent Day 16

Good morning!

Today, we are asked to read Matthew 3:8 and Matthew 12:33-37. These are both instances that involve the Pharisees getting chewed out for their legalism without love, and the explanation that beating fruit is our evidence of faithful, spiritual maturity.

The amazing difference between bearing fruit in faith and an actual plant bearing fruit is we can produce immediate fruit. A plant must grow to full maturity to grow fruit, while we can begin the work of the Spirit and get immediate fruitful results. We can reconcile with others, repair relationships, stop unhealthy habits, etc. As you are called and walk in the steps of Jesus, good fruits will flow from you!

What sort of fruit is the Spirit growing on your tree of faith right now?

I remember the first Walk to Emmaus I worked. I was 21 years old and quite the strong headed young man. I was serving in the background and simply needed to do as I was told. Unfortunately, that wasn't what I did. I thought it would be better set up an event my way. I even outright argued with the leader of my area of service. It looked really cool when it was done because I simply ignored his instructions after he walked away in frustration, but, and this is a big one, I didn't listen and do what I was asked. It turns out, I was asked to change the format for the set up because we had someone in a wheelchair who needed to get through into the room. The way I set it up did not allow for enough space for them to get through. We had to, in the moment, tear down my set up so this gentleman could access the room. I felt terrible. I prayed and before the weekend was over, I apologized to several men for my words and actions. I learned a big lesson in that moment and bore some fruit too!

Blessings,

Pastor Jesse
