REFEREE FAQ’s
What is expected of me as a referee?
Upward Referees are the highest authority figures on the court.  They serve as role models and mentors on and off the court.  In addition to knowing the rules that are unique to basketball and the league, referees act as an extension of the coach as they teach and encourage players while officiating.  The biggest difference between Upward basketball and other leagues are the action and attitudes of the officials.

How do the coaches and fans view referees in Upward?
Coaches are trained that they have the responsibility during games to support and encourage referees with positive comments. Calls are going to be missed, moments are going to be intense and the reaction of coaches are going to be the defining moment of the season. All leaders are taught to model the Circle of Affirmation. In the Circle of Affirmation, negative comments are avoided, which in turn encourages parents and players to take the same approach.

What resources will be provided to me?

¨ Referee Handbook– a complete resource of refereeing information

¨ Referee DVD– a supplement to the handbook

¨ www.upward.org/upwardreferee– website serving Upward referees

Do I call all violations or fouls?
To promote proper basketball skills and understanding of the game, referees should call all fouls and violations. Failing to call these infractions creates confusion among players and hinders their understanding of the game. The referee acts as an extension of the coach by explaining all fouls and violations to players. The length of explanation decreases as the season progresses.
