COACH
All teams will have at least one coach who is an active member at a church, and all must go through a screening process, including a criminal background check and may have to provide personal references. Each team will have a minimum of two coaches. All coaches will review and commit to follow Emmanuel’s Child Safety Guidelines. We do this for the safety of the children, leaders and families involved in Upward.
We provide training for coaches and expect all who volunteer for this position to go through the training. Dates for training for the 2010-2011 season are November 6 and December 4 beginning at 9:00 am at Emmanuel.

What is expected of me as a coach?
Upward is designed to be a competitive and fun environment for kids. This environment rests in the hands of the coach at practices and games. It is up to the coach to equip players with the athletic skills they are pursuing and to be an ambassador for sportsmanship and character on and off the court.
The success of a coach is not based on wins and losses. It is based on how he or she stresses the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity and respect.
An Upward Coach should:
¨ Create and build relationships with players
¨ Teach how each player can have a growing relationship with the Lord
¨ Share his/her relationship with the Lord through his/her words and actions
¨ Develop and protect the self-esteem of each player
¨ Teach fundamental skills of the sport
¨ Understand the sport and rules unique to Upward
¨ Make practice and games a positive/competitive experience
